Non-invasive transcutaneous bilirubin measurement
Modern bilirubinometers do not require puncturing the skin to perform a measurement. Transcutaneous bilirubin measurement is based on xenon light irradiation, which permeates the skin and enables analysis and determines bilirubin level. This kind of test performed on the newborn consists of applying the sensor and performing transcutaneous measurement through skin irradiation, which takes a few seconds and displays the result one second later.
Transcutaneous total bilirubin measurement is currently a standard in diagnosing and treating neonatal jaundice. Because there is no need to puncture the newborn's skin, the stress related to measurement is minimal. Bilirubinometer test is also significantly more precise when compared to organoleptic method, which involves observing the color of newborn's conjunctiva and skin. Non-invasive bilirubin measurement in the newborn with MBJ20 ensures precise result with accuracy of the order of 1 mg/ dL for physiological values and 1.5 mg/dL for elevated bilirubin readings.
Compact size enables using the device in home settings, which is especially important for newborns discharged from the hospital on the second day after delivery. High bilirubin levels are easier to measure in the period between 2 and 4 days after delivery. Performing the measurement at home with portable measuring device improves diagnostics and allows for rapidly starting phototherapy in the newborn. It takes only a few seconds to measure the bilirubin concentration in the newborn and keeping the bilirubinometer at home enables to monitor this parameter continuously.
Neonatal jaundice - measuring bilirubin level in the newborn
Elevated bilirubin concentration in the newborn and neonatal jaundice are typical for newborns, but total bilirubin level needs to be constantly monitored. Although in most cases neonatal jaundice has a mild course and resolves spontaneously, in some babies hyperbilirubinemia may occur, leading to medical complications. In order to make sure that we are dealing with a mild course of jaundice and bilirubin levels are not elevated, regular tests with bilirubin meter are required. Non-invasive transcutaneous bilirubin measurement spares the newborn unnecessary trauma and pain, making the test easily tolerable. Transcutaneous bilirubin measurement is a worldwide standard every baby deserves.
